Keeping Your Child Busy

It’s been just about four weeks that my daughter has been in kindergarten. Nobody told me about the guilt one would feel about sending her to all day kindergarten. I thought this was a great opportunity to increase my monthly income. My daughter would go to school 9am to 3pm not a real long day and I would pick her up everyday at 3pm. Unfortunately my daughter is not happy about me working and her having to go to school everyday. I know this is all new for her because she has been very lucky since birth. I’ve made sure that either me or my husband would always be home with her if one is working. My parents have also been there since her birth to help out whenever they can. I’ve been lucky to be able to be a stay at home mom with my daughter, so really this is me just trying to get some feedback of other families in the same situation. Getting back to my child keeping busy I thought it would be a great idea to sign her up for gymnastics. I don’t want to change her routine through the week because she really needs to get used to 9 to 3pm school days. Starting this Sunday and every other Sunday after that she will be going to blow of some steam. I think this is a great out of school activity that she will love. Plus she will be with her dad and that’s something that they can share together.

It’s so funny because she’s so excited about this so she thought it would be something cool to tell another kid at school. This was our conversation in the car after school. My daughter ” I told my friend that I have gymnastics after school.” The friend said that gymnastics isn’t cool.” Then I asked my daughter what she said.” My friend thinks she is a princess.” Then my daughter tells me that she told her friend about gymnastics because she thought she would think it’s cool. My daughter is 5 years old and already worrying about if some one thinks she’s cool or not. I said to my daughter don’t worry about what others think of you. Do things that you are happy doing, things that you love.

I really hope she will have fun this Sunday and not worry about what other think. She’s definitely on the right track!!!

First week of kindergarten

Well I made it through the first week of kindergarten. My daughter happily made it through her first week. She’s in french immersion so she’s adapting to it all on her own time. I drop her off every morning and pick her up at 3pm. Unless I’m working then her dad will drop her off on his way to work. I’ve been busy this week with all the wedding plans. Yes I’m getting married October 10th is the day. It’s been great because I’m able to go and get things done when it comes to the wedding. Like for instance I had to go find a strapless bra for my wedding dress.

I found the best strapless bra from the bay and I was even able to try it on. Actually I was able to try on several bras without the worry of where my daughter was hiding. That is her new thing right now, going off when my back is turned for a second. It was really nice not to worry. School gets out at 3pm but I usually  get at her school by 230ish. I love peeking in on her to see what she’s up too. I’ve noticed that she’s pretty hungry when she gets home from school honestly what kid isn’t starving when coming home. What I usually do is let her eat the rest off her lunch if there is any left and depending on what it is. I’m looking forward to the next week of kindergarten it really wasn’t that bad. I thought there would be placement issues and cubbyhole drama. School is all about routine and orderly it’s wonderful.

Welcome to Kindergarten

7362269There is only 3 days left before my babygirl starts kindergarten. I never thought the day would come, honestly I can’t believe that she starts her first day of school in only 3 days.  My daughter is definitely ready for it. She has been in preschool for the last 2 years. I had her in morning preschool 3x a week. Also in swimming lessons and 4 cats art academy. These are things I would like for her to keep at but I don’t want to over load her with activities. I have my daughter in kinder-care, which is before school care it starts at 845am to 1225pm. Then she goes to her kindergarten class at 1225 to 3pm. Busy day for her. I have stayed home with my daughter since she was born. Well I work part time as a RCA in that whole time  I was always there to bring her to all her activities. My husband and I have alternate schedules which means he has a great 9 to 5pm job Monday to Friday. I on the other hand work weekends and some holidays. Now that our daughter is starting kindergarten I would like to get away from working weekends. It breaks my heart to have her in school all week then when she’s home on the weekends I’m at work. In my area of work it’s really hard to find Monday to Friday day shifts permanently.

Anyway getting back to kindergarten. I recently went to the grocery store to get all the wonderful healthy nutritious snacks for her to have while at school. I also want to keep it simple and easy when getting her lunches and snacks ready the night before.

One really cool recipe is mock sushi. You buy whole wheat tortilla wraps (the green tortilla wraps are fun because they kinda look like the seaweed),cucumber, avocado, carrots, zucchini, orange peppers and cream cheese. I buy garlic and herb cream cheese buts it’s up to you. I usually cut all the veggies julienne style easier to roll up. I cover the whole tortilla with cream cheese the I put in cucumber, peppers and avocado. Roll it up and slice into 3/4 inch wheels. Mix it up with the veggies too. Sometimes I’ll have just cucumber in one roll and shredded carrot in another roll. Plus you’ll have left over wheels for the next day or a great snack for after school.

Protecting your child from viruses can be tough especially with all the news about H1N1. Teaching my daughter proper hand washing skills and keeping her aware of how to protect herself from others germs by showing her proper ways of covering up her mouth when coughing and sneezing. It really starts at home if your doing all the things that your showing your child you become a great role model by setting a good example. I purchased a travel size hand sanitizer (alcohol-free) bottle for her to keep in her lunch bag. That’s another protective measure to ensure that she’s a bit more protected. Which gives me some peace of mind.
