Boxing/Fitness Bootcamp

boxingI’ve always had a curiosity about boxing but I never followed through with the feeling. I started running over a year ago and just love it. Running gives me a feeling of self power, confidence and lets be honest, it helps maintain body weight. I’ve been so self conscious about my body size and never really had the motivation to keep up a steady fitness routine. Going to a personal trainer really helped out with the motivation part of it. Once I had the motivation I found myself conquering my goals. I was eating really good as in no junk!! I never bought into the protein drinks and greens. I thought why don’t I spend the 60$$ on real food like organic fruit and veggies. It basically comes down to if your 100% committed then chopping up veggies and blending up smoothies become your daily routine to a better you. The personal training was really great I was able to take what I needed and applied it to my own fitness. I really became interested in fitness and one of my goals was to learn more about the body and health. So that’s what I did I started taking fitness theory which was helpful when it came to the basics of fitness. Then I took the weight training course, that was really interesting. I was able to come up with my own weight training routines and actually understand the way the muscles work. That to me was awesome. Also learning about fitness training really gave me the incentive to stay on track.

Still thinking about boxing I started looking around for something like kickboxing or some sort of training other than running and lifting weights. I wanted something that would completely give me a great overall workout that would basically just kick the shit out of me. I wanted something intense that would keep me coming back for more. I found it!!! If you haven’t already heard about it, is one of the best gyms I’ve been to in a long time. It’s called Capital City Boxing. I’ve been going to this gym for almost a year now. It has everything that I’ve been looking for…….. self confidence, core strength, total body work out mind and body. I’m in the boxing/fitness bootcamp which means early mornings but it’s perfect for me. I’m back home with plenty of time to get my daughter ready for school and have coffee with my husband. The fitness couch Sandy is one of the best trainers I’ve met. She has such a great way of making you feel incredibly great about your overall mind body and soul health. This is the perfect class for me this is what I’ve always wanted to do but could never find the right place or time. The cost is very affordable there is no contracts or yearly membership fees.
If you are thinking about giving it a try don’t let one class decide if it’s for you. It’s very humbling because if you haven’t jumped rope since you were in grade school then this will definitely be a new way to start your workout every morning. I love skipping there is alot of skipping techniques that can become just one of your skills.

I hope to become a role model to my 5 year old daughter, that will empower her to want to try anything that she sets her mind to and realize that she has the ability to do anything once or twice.

Keeping Your Child Busy

It’s been just about four weeks that my daughter has been in kindergarten. Nobody told me about the guilt one would feel about sending her to all day kindergarten. I thought this was a great opportunity to increase my monthly income. My daughter would go to school 9am to 3pm not a real long day and I would pick her up everyday at 3pm. Unfortunately my daughter is not happy about me working and her having to go to school everyday. I know this is all new for her because she has been very lucky since birth. I’ve made sure that either me or my husband would always be home with her if one is working. My parents have also been there since her birth to help out whenever they can. I’ve been lucky to be able to be a stay at home mom with my daughter, so really this is me just trying to get some feedback of other families in the same situation. Getting back to my child keeping busy I thought it would be a great idea to sign her up for gymnastics. I don’t want to change her routine through the week because she really needs to get used to 9 to 3pm school days. Starting this Sunday and every other Sunday after that she will be going to blow of some steam. I think this is a great out of school activity that she will love. Plus she will be with her dad and that’s something that they can share together.

It’s so funny because she’s so excited about this so she thought it would be something cool to tell another kid at school. This was our conversation in the car after school. My daughter ” I told my friend that I have gymnastics after school.” The friend said that gymnastics isn’t cool.” Then I asked my daughter what she said.” My friend thinks she is a princess.” Then my daughter tells me that she told her friend about gymnastics because she thought she would think it’s cool. My daughter is 5 years old and already worrying about if some one thinks she’s cool or not. I said to my daughter don’t worry about what others think of you. Do things that you are happy doing, things that you love.

I really hope she will have fun this Sunday and not worry about what other think. She’s definitely on the right track!!!

Love/Hate for Running

runnerMy love for running has definitely changed over the year. I started running for health, but the more I ran the more it was for different reasons. When I first started running I didn’t realize how out of shape I was. It became clear if running was my exercise of choice then I really really needed to keep working at it. I never wanted to look like a runner I just wanted to run and not be seen. I decided I didn’t want to run by myself so one day I walked into a running room store and that’s  when everything changed for the better.

I was in the learn to run group which is a great idea if you have never ran before. The group starts out slow running for 1 min, walk for 2min and so on until you can run 10min walk 1 min then run another 10 min. Basically you learn to run for 20 minutes with a 1 minute walk at the half time mark. After the learn to run group I decided it was time to buy some running gear. More running shoes for sure. It’s always a good idea to have 2 pairs of  good quality runners. Any running store will fit your foot to the right kind of shoe. If your a pronator which is basically you walk  on the outside of your foot. I also have low arches so motion control runners are the best for me. I highly recommend making sure you have the right running shoe, less injury in the future.

I also got my dad involved in running which he began to love. Our goal was to run the Run for the Cure 5 km in October. We had 2 months to train for it . We ran it together which was nice to have my dad running with me, especially when I thought I needed to stop. But we did it in 31 min. That’s pretty good for first timers!! Months went by and we kept running together and with running groups. That’s when my love/hate relationships with running started. I know we all have good days and bad days when it comes to running. It all depends on your diet and how much sleep your getting each night. I was so happy about finishing the 5 km race I competed in other 5 km races. Sometimes I would hate running and have to push my self to meet with my dad but I still ran. Other times I felt such a high when running with my dad or by myself. It was an escape from my 4 year old daughter. Don’t get me wrong I love her to pieces but it was nice to do something for myself with no guilt. Just last April I ran in the Times Colonist 10k. That was amazing, what a feeling to cross the finish line. My dad didn’t run in that one but there’s always next year. I finished the race in 67 mins. I was so proud of my self!!
